E2O announces 10-Gbit/sec XFP module

E2O Communications Inc. has introduced what it claims is the world's first 850-nm XFP transceiver for use in 10-Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10-Gigabit Fibre Channel applications. The EM1053 is a VCSEL-based 850-nm, 10-Gbit/sec serial optical transceiver which supports up to 300 m of high bandwidth multimode (MM) fiber transmission, and 82 m of the standard 50-micron MM fiber transmission.

These XFP transceivers feature a serial 10-Gbit/sec XFI electrical interface, which eliminates the need for electrical mux/demux chips inside the module--resulting in significant space, power, and cost savings for datacom and telecom system manufacturers, say company representatives. The transceiver uses standard LC duplex optical receptacles and features a 30-pin hot-pluggable interface. The XFP's small footprint and low power dissipation (-1.7 watts 850 nm) enables the highest board density applications in the industry, claims E2O. These factors, in addition to its protocol independence, provide the lowest overall system cost solution for OEMs.

Samples will be available shortly. Production is scheduled for Q2 2003.
