Phosistor's new super lens reduces optical packaging costs

March 19, 2003--Startup Phosistor Technologies Inc., developer of integratable photonics, has developed what it claims is the world's smallest, highest performance, and lowest cost super lens that will drastically reduce the cost of packaging of both optical active and passive devices. The super lens measures only ten micrometers and is manufactured using traditional silicon VLSI fabrication technologies.

"The super lens can be mass produced on either 4" or 6" Silicon wafers and has the flexibility of design change during fabrication," explain Dr. Cheng and Dr. Yun, senior engineers. The development of the super lens was led by Dr. Yan Zhou, vice president of technology.

"The versatility of the super lens is such that it can be integrated on a Silicon optical bench allowing passively self-aligned coupling or made as part of a lensed fiber, thus enabling low cost packaging for cost sensitive metro and access markets," adds Dr. Ranjit Mand, vice president of marketing.

According to Dr. Seng-Tiong Ho, chief executive officer, Phosistor engineers were able to achieve this industry first thanks to the company's proprietary design and its state-of-the-art growth techniques and processing.
