Maxim launches multirate laser driver with extinction ratio control

17 April 2003 Sunnyvale, CA Lightwave -- Maxim Integrated Products today introduced the MAX3737, a multirate laser driver with extinction ratio control that operates from 155 Mbits/sec to 2.7 Gbits/sec.

The device features a +3.3V single supply and can be AC- or DC-coupled to the laser diode for use in OC-3 to OC-48, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel transceiver modules. Manufactured using Maxim's in-house, second-generation SiGe process, the MAX3737 features excellent performance and consumes less power than competing solutions, say company representatives.

The MAX3737 includes automatic power control (APC) and extinction ratio control features, which, along with on-chip thermal compensation, allow the module to maintain a constant extinction ratio over lifetime and temperature. The laser driver meets all SFF-8472 timing and diagnostic requirements for SFP modules featuring
Digital Diagnostics.

The MAX3737 has a programmable bias current range of 1mA to 100mA. The modulation current can also be programmed from 5 mA to 60 mA when DC-coupled and up to 85 mA when AC-coupled. The driver has self-biasing data inputs and consumes only 155mW. The MAX3737 has edge-speed transition times of 52 ps and generates only 16 ps and 0.6 ps of deterministic and random jitter (2.7 Gbit/sec operation), respectively.

The MAX3737 is available in a 5mm x 5mm, 32-pin QFN package and is specified over the extended-industrial temperature range (-40 ° C to +85 ° C). Evaluation kits are available to speed design. For more information, visit the company's Web site at www.maxim-ic.com.
