Romanian government secures communications with Riverstone network

7 May 2003 Santa Clara CA--The Romanian Gendarmerie, the military branch of Romania's Ministry of Interior, is building a new communications infrastructure based on Riverstone's mission critical networking solutions.

"Network security and reliability are the essential features of our communications infrastructure country-wide," said Dr. Tudor Cearapin, commander of the Romanian Gendarmerie.

"Riverstone's networking solutions combine migration technology, network control tools and high availability features to give us the telecommunications support we need."

Riverstone's RS 8000 routers are providing Romania's Gendarmerie with the tools it needs to guarantee network security and increase application and user-level control in its fully integrated voice and data network.

Traffic prioritisation features complement enable the Gendarmerie to improve the flow of traffic on its network. And to increase network reliability and uptime, it is also using Riverstone's Hitless Protection System.

"We are witnessing an evolution in the telecommunications industry as mission critical networks are increasingly adopting classic carrier network characteristics," said Steve Whipps, Riverstone's general manager for Europe.

"High reliability and bandwidth control is now the mantra for carrier and mission critical network operators alike and Riverstone's technology is uniquely suited to serve those needs."

Leveraging Riverstone's ATM circuit extension technology, the Romanian Gendarmerie is extending its ATM network with Ethernet technology to increase network scalability and manageability.

Riverstone's advanced circuit extension technology extends bandwidth controls across the ATM/Ethernet network boundary, enabling the Romanian Gendarmerie to build highly secure multipoint-to-multipoint networks that connect its multiple headquarter offices, training sites and brigades over a hybrid of ATM and Ethernet technologies.

Datek Telecom, a Romanian-based integrator of advanced communications infrastructures, is under contract to plan, engineer, design, install and test the communications infrastructure within the Gendarmerie Headquarters.
