Passave unveils FTTH chips for EPON systems based on emerging IEEE 802.3ah

11 June 2003 Sunnyvale, CA Lightwave -- Passave Technologies Inc., provider of low-cost, high performance chipsets for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Ethernet, today announced a line of products suitable for deployment in Gigabit Ethernet PON FTTH optical network units (ONUs).

The PAS6001 high performance single-chip EPON solution is ideal for low-complexity FTTH ONUs, say company representatives. Additional applications include FTTB, and IP backhaul for WLAN, remote DSLAMs, and cellular stations. The PAS6001, when combined with the PAS5001 optical line terminal (OLT) chip, provides a complete end-to-end solution for Gigabit EPON.

"Passave is committed to providing a complete solution for EPON, reducing costs and integration time for our system partners," contends Victor Vaisleib, founder and chief executive officer of Passave. "Vendors can now use PAS6001 to build low-cost systems with all required management, networking, and security features in a single chip."

According to the company, the PAS6001 is the first device conforming to the emerging IEEE 802.3ah EFM standard. It integrates EPON (Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) point-to-multi-point) and optical add/drop multiplexing (OAM) functionality. "We are proud to offer chips implementing the latest IEEE drafts, providing true proof that Ethernet and PONs are a viable solution to meet carriers' needs," adds Ariel Maislos, founder and president of Passave and editor for the IEEE 802.3ah EPON track.

The PAS6001 single-chip-solution features integrated security, PON protocol, OAM protocol, UNI, burst control, as well as bridging with IGMP filtering and traffic management functions. Integrating all required buffer memories and capable of standalone operation without an additional CPU, the PAS6001 reduces ONU bill of materials (BOM), and enables vendors to profitably meet FTTH cost targets, say company representatives. The PAS6001 is proven with burst optics from multiple vendors and supports the industrial temperature range for harsh environment use.
The PAS6001 is available for sampling in a 256-FBGA package. Also available are the PAS65005 reference design and the PAS65003 sample board.
