India's Tata Power deploys ECI Telecom's XDM optical platform

15 July 2003 Petah Tikva, Israel -- Tata Power Company Ltd., part of the Tata Group and one of India's leading carrier's carriers, has deployed ECI Telecom's XDM multi-service optical platform within its DWDM network backbone.

Under Phase one of the project, a number of XDM platforms have been installed and are running live traffic within Tata's telecommunications infrastructure. Further network expansion is expected in the near future.

Rahul Chaudhry, CEO of Tata Power Broadband, said, "Rapid growth in demand for data services is putting Indian network infrastructure under immense pressure. In order to address this we have partnered with some of the world's major equipment manufacturers to create a state-of-the-art Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) that will enable us to meet the service requirements of our customers now and into the future."

Next to China, India is currently the largest high growth market in the world with dramatically increasing telecom infrastructure and the number of cellular subscribers doubling every year.

Tata Power is the first telecoms provider in India to deploy DWDM technology within its MAN. This technology milestone reflects the company's mission to become the leading carrier of carriers in the Mumbai (previously known as Bombay) area and beyond.

Tata Power installed ECI's XDM optical platforms to maintain its high quality DWDM backbone for delivery of broadband services such as data, video and voice to its customer base.

The XDM's unique "Build As You Grow" feature was a key factor in its selection over competitive offerings. By integrating multiple network elements within one unified platform, the XDM replaces the need for investment in additional equipment as the network evolves.

This cost-effective, scalable approach provides Tata Power with the flexibility to upgrade its network according to future demand. The XDM converges optical DWDM capabilities, multiple SONET/SDH rings, digital cross connects (DXC), carrier-class Gigabit Ethernet and on-demand network provisioning within a single architecture device.

"ECI has been active in the Indian telecommunications market for over 15 years with its Digital Circuit Multiplication Equipment. During the past few years, numerous XDMs have been installed within the networks of the country's major cellular operators", said Ido Gur, VP sales and marketing, ECI's Optical Networks Division.

"Our commitment to this market is reflected in the recent opening of the ECI office in Mumbai to offer full service and support to our customers across India."

Tata Power
Tata Power's Broadband division (TPBB) is credited with offering India's first DWDM network and first Gigabit switched IP network with MPLS (Multi-protocol Label Switched) services.

TPBB has created a state-of-the-art Metro Area Network (MAN) with 750km of multiple optical fibre ring networks. This has enabled TPBB to offer high speed connectivity (from 2-Mbit/s to 1-Gbit/s on IP and upto 2.5-Gbit/s on clear channel TDM) with stringent service level agreements for the voice, video, data and internet applications.
