Doped erbium fibre designed for amplified spontaneous emission

28 July 2003 Lohja, Finland -- Liekki Oy, a leading supplier of highly doped speciality optical fibre, has launched its LF 3000 series fibers for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light sources.

Offering high power density output, wide bandwidth and "state-of-the-art" gain flatness, the LF 3000 fibres offer unprecedented performance especially for C+L and L-band ASE applications. The fibre offers application bandwidth of 1525-1605nm, with 5dBm/nm output power density and less than 5dB maximum ripple across the band without filtering.

"These fibres show excellent performance in ASE applications, and demonstrate the strength of our Direct Nanoparticle Deposition production process," said Per Stenius, CEO of Liekki Oy.

"LF 3000 fibres help our customers meet demanding specifications while reducing the total application cost. The ability to use shorter fibres makes compact designs possible, and the good splicing properties of these fibres make production easier."

The LF 3000 series includes three distinct fibres with different erbium concentrations: LF 3200 (20dB/m at 1530nm), LF 3300 (30dB/m) and LF 3400 (40dB/m). Required fibre length for ASE C+L band light sources is less than 15-m, and for C band light sources less than 2-m.

A splicing loss as low as 0.05dB can be achieved with commercially available fusion splicers. With these fibres ASE light source designers have the necessary flexibility to meet the required performance and minimise the total application cost.

Liekki Oy
The company produces highly doped speciality optical fibres for telecom, laser and other photonics applications. Liekki's Direct Nanoparticle Deposition (DND) process allows precise control of doping, and applies to a broad range of dopants.

The fibres provide strong amplification with broad and flat gain profile, high efficiency, and low nonlinear effects such as four-wave mixing. Liekki says its fibres have good splicing, temperature and bending characteristics.

The company is headquartered in Lohja, Finland, with a sales office in Waltham, MA. Liekki is represented by Apollo Ltd. (China), Chon Sun Engineering Co. (Korea), IKG Corporation (Japan), and Fintech Solutions (Malaysia/Taiwan).
