1 August 2003 Munich and Rome Lightwave -- The Indonesian telecommunications company Indosat has commissioned Pirelli and Siemens as a consortium to deliver a turnkey high-speed optical fiber network. The three subnetworks in East Java, Jakarta-Bandung, and Sumatra will cover a total of more than 1376 km. They will form the backbone for nationwide transport of both fixed network and mobile telephony data. The order is worth around 20 million euros.
The new SDH optical fiber network is expected to give Indosat enough transport capacity to offer telecommunications services nationwide via its own backbone network, and will thus enable it to realize another step towards its strategic goal of becoming a "full-service operator."
Siemens IC Networks, the consortium leader, will provide the transmission equipment, as well as the relevant cable and equipment installation. The company hopes to set up the network in just half a year. Pirelli will deliver the terrestrial cable, equipped with 24 new Pirelli SM Light fibers.
