Maxim Integrated Products launches 2.7-Gbit/sec transimpedance amplifiers for digital diagnostic SFP modules

4 August 2003 Sunnyvale, CA Lightwave--Maxim Integrated Products is introducing the MAX3744/MAX3745 3.3V, 2.7-Gbit/sec transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs). When used with the MAX3748A limiting amplifier, the MAX3744 TIA enables receive-power monitoring. The MAX3744 TIA, the MAX3748 limiting amplifier, and the MAX3735/MAX3740 laser drivers form a chipset for SONET, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel SFP digital diagnostic modules.

The MAX3744 TIA is designed for SFF-8472-compatible receiver modules. When DC-coupled to the MAX3748A limiting amplifier, the MAX3744 TIA provides a receive-power-monitoring signal for digital diagnostic applications. This allows the implementation of digital diagnostics, while enabling the TIA to be packaged in a low-cost, 4-pin TO-46 header. The MAX3745 TIA can be AC-coupled to other limiting amplifiers and does not provide the RSSI function.

Operating from a single 3.3V supply, the TIAs provide 1.8 GHz bandwidth and provide 3.5 kilohm of gain, while consuming only 93mW of power. The TIAs have an input overload of 2mA and generate only 330nA root-mean-square of input referred noise. The MAX3744/MAX3745 TIAs have a 30-kHz low frequency cutoff and generate only 10 psec of deterministic jitter at 2.125 GHz.

The MAX3744/MAX3745 TIAs are available in 1.27mm x 0.76mm dice over the extended temperature range (-40ºC to +85ºC). Prices start at $3.50 (1000-up, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available to speed design.
