Lumics unveils 975-nm fiber-coupled laser

1 December 2003 Berlin, Germany Lightwave Europe -- Lumics, manufacturer of pump laser modules and laser chips, has introduced the LU0975M017 laser module with up to 1.7-W output power from a multimode fiber.

The cooled LU0975M017 laser modules generate up to 1.7-W optical power at the 975-nm wavelength. Target applications include analytical, medical, and sensing applications as well as double clad Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs). The high power module enables cost effective system design with enhanced performance, say company representatives.

The laser is available in a cooled, low profile, 14-pin butterfly package coupled with a 100- μ m multimode fiber. The fiber is terminated with a standard 2.5-mm diameter ceramic ferrule. The complete module assembly is based on superior telecom laser package technology according Telcordia reliability requirements, claims Lumics. The production is manufactured in an ISO 9001 approved factory with several screening steps throughout the chip manufacturing and module assembly process.

The LU075M017 includes a thermo-electric cooler that is specified with maximum current of 2.4 A and maximum voltage of 3 V. The maximum operating current is specified with 3.3 A (typical). The very low forward voltage is specified with maximum 2.2 V. The threshold current is typically 225 mA. The laser module is also available with an FC/PC connector. The performance of the device is based on Lumics' propriety chip technology, which ensures very high reliability with a breakthrough in laser facet passivation.

Products samples are available now.
