General Cable adds plenum-rated, indoor/outdoor, buffered distribution cable

February 23, 2005 Highland Heights, KY -- General Cable, a manufacturer of copper, aluminum, and fiber-optic wire and cable products for communications, energy, industrial, and specialty applications, has expanded its NextGen line of fiber-optic cables by introducing its UL Type, ONFP-approved, plenum-rated, indoor/outdoor distribution cable.

According to the company, the cable is available in any type of industry-standard optical fiber, including G10X and G10Xplus - 50/125 fibers, engineered to provide 10Gbit/sec performance over distances of 300 m and 500 m at 850 nm respectively, as well as in low-water peak singlemode fiber, ideal for CWDM applications.

"With this additional product offering, we are able to meet the needs of any type of inter-building application. System designers can now choose the cable design that is best suited for their particular installation and operating environment," contends Trish Dawson, market development manager for NextGen Fiber Optics.

The company says that because the cable's plenum rating meets inter-building installation requirements, entryway transition splice points are eliminated. Also, according to the company, termination time and expense associated with breakout kits can be eliminated because the cable's 900-um buffered fibers allow for direct termination of connectors. The company says the cable's indoor/outdoor design is ideal for applications where the cable transition point is located in a non-traditional space, such as a computer room.

The company offers a range of rugged and hybrid fiber-optic cable products for premise and outside-plant conventional applications, including loose tube riser, low-smoke, zero-halogen (LSZH), riser distribution, and central tube riser cables, as well as advanced air blown fiber systems.
