BroadLight unveils GPON, EPON, and BPON transceivers at OFC

March 7, 2005 Mountain View, CA -- BroadLight, a supplier of semiconductors, software, and transceivers for FTTP deployments, has announced its line of small form factor (SFF) multi-source agreement (MSA) transceivers for GPON, EPON, and BPON applications, as well as a GE-PON transceiver, in both two and three wavelengths. According to the company, the transceivers target both central office optical line terminal (OLT) and customer premises optical network terminal (ONT) applications, blending superior performance with telecom grade quality.

"By delivering transceivers for every PON flavor, BroadLight is extending its North American leadership position into the fast growing Asian market, and enabling cost-effective broadcast video over GE-PON," asserts Andy Vought, CEO of BroadLight.

The transceivers are designed for single-fiber, point-to-multipoint FTTP applications. The SFF line consists of four GPON transceivers (1244/622 ONT and OLT, 1244/1244 ONT and OLT), two GE-PON transceivers (1.25/1.25 ONT and OLT), and 1 BPON transceiver (622/155 ONT). A GE-PON three wavelengths transceiver (1.25/1.25 ONT with CATV output) is also being offered in the same package as the company's current ITU BPON three wavelengths transceivers.

According to the company, the ITU-T G.984-compliant GPON line provides unmatched performance over operating temperature, with ONT and OLT devices together providing a minimum 29-dB component optical link budget. The ITU-T G.983-compliant BPON ONT line features -30 dBm receive sensitivity, with a transmit launch power of 0 dBm over a temperature range of -40ºC to +85 ºC. The IEEE 802.3ah-compliant GE-PON line provides what the company calls guaranteed optical performance, with the OLT transceiver supporting a receive sensitivity of -30 dBm, and a +2 dBm minimum launch power, and the ONT transceiver supporting a -27 dBm receive sensitivity, and a 0 dBm launch power. The 3-wavelength, GE-PON ONT triplex transceiver operates over ITU-T compliant wavelengths and provides the same performance as the SFF device for data, while delivering CATV quality from a receive sensitivity of +2 to -6 dBm on the 1550-nm broadcast video wavelength.

"With its new transceiver line and PON experience, BroadLight has positioned itself nicely to be in the current, principally Asian, GE-PON and principally North American BPON markets, and also has the opportunity to be among the leaders of the emerging GPON market, which we believe represents significant growth in the future," remarks Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research.

The company says the transceivers are currently sampling, and will be manufactured in compliance to Telcordia, TL, and ISO standards. The company is previewing the products at this week's OFC/NFOEC conference, in Booth 1559.
