Qwest mounts Denver FTTH deployment

April 13, 2005 Denver, CO -- Qwest has installed FTTH technology at RidgeGate, a planned, mixed-use, urban residential community in Denver's southern metro area. The FTTH deployment is the carrier's first, offering residents high-speed data capabilities and television programming, as well as local and long-distance telephone services.

According to a press release, the carrier has determined that in certain residential developments where greenfield conditions exist, it will henceforth deploy FTTH technology to better serve customers' current and future needs for broadband services. The carrier says its residential fiber service enables simultaneous TV programming (HDTV) and Internet use, while ensuring customers' home connections with support for future applications.

According to the release, homes in the Denver development are designed according to specification, with built-in modems and Ethernet jacks, to ensure efficient in-home signal travel, while minimizing the need for future upgrades. The carrier says its dedicated connections ensure optimal transmission speeds during a community's peak online usage times. The development's homes receive initial connection speeds of 1.5-Mbit/sec, with option to upgrade to higher speeds.

"FTTH is an extension of our efforts to deliver new broadband services and applications to customers," remarks Jim Vogel, vice president of sales for Qwest. "As a result, RidgeGate homeowners will have some of the most technologically advanced households in the state."

When asked to name vendors supplying equipment in the deployment, a Qwest spokeswoman declined to comment.
