RAD extends SONET, Ethernet service footprint for central OR CLEC

July 11, 2005 Mahwah, NJ -- Quantum Communications, a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) serving the small cities and rural regions of central Oregon, has deployed RAD Data Communications' RICi-T1 intelligent converters to leverage an existing TDM-based SONET network in order to provide next-generation Ethernet services.

With an installed fiber network connecting the city of Bend, Oregon, with the cities of Redmond and Madras, the CLEC provides businesses in these areas with TDM telephony, next-generation Ethernet, and virtual private network (VPN) services. The CLEC says one of its key objectives is to provide out-of-network coverage for surrounding, geographically dispersed regions not directly connected to its fiber network. To do that, the CLEC says it had to find a way to utilize its existing SONET network to transport next-generation Ethernet. After comparing RAD's RICi-T1 intelligent converter with a selection of competitive products from other manufacturers, the CLEC says it determined the RICi-T1 offered the best platform.

The CLEC says the platform's superior manageability reduces maintenance costs and system downtime, allowing for remote network management and troubleshooting of customer-located units using an SNMP, Web browser, or Telnet connection located at a central site. The CLEC says the platform also enables service level agreements with differentiated Quality of Service levels.
