PAV's FSO system targets telcos

August 19, 2005 Liverpool, UK -- PAV recently introduced its fully digital PAVLight 2E1 free space optical (FSO) system. According to the company, supporting transmissions up to 2.048 Mbit/sec, the system incorporates two independently clocked E1 circuits transmitting data streams over a single FSO link up to distances of 4 km.

For a single FSO link, according to the company, the system enables a reduction in the infrastructure equipment required, while at the same time doubling transmission capability. The company say that use of the system requires a only single Cat5 cable (RJ-45 connector); a 75-Ohm option for the system is also available to enable the use of coax. An Alarm Indication Signal (AIS) is available on all E1 channels under fault conditions or LOS (Loss Of Signal).

According to the company, the system requires no indoor unit, meaning no multiplexer is needed to connect the two E1 circuits to the link head; this connection is achieved at the link head itself. Also, according to the company, the system's modular design means that it can be upgraded by simply swapping modules, from 2E1 to 4E1, with no realignment required.

Like the rest of the company's PAVLight range, the 2E1 system is available in both 2-km (single transmitter) and 4-km (3 transmitter) versions.
