Cable & Wireless selects Cisco IP core router platform

September 2, 2005 London, UK -- Cable & Wireless has awarded a contract to Cisco Systems to provide the Internet protocol (IP) core element for the carrier's next generation network (NGN). The carrier will deploy 15 Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System routers throughout its UK network, each equipped with Cisco's IOS XR, a carrier-grade Internet operating system.

The carrier says the IP core element of its network will provide underlying connectivity and resilience for carrying high capacity IP traffic across its entire network. According to Cisco, the Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-enabled infrastructure utilizes advanced engineering capability to allow the carrier to meet stringent customer service levels and performance thresholds, including support for carrying voice, video, and data services over a converged network architecture.

"Cable & Wireless is leading the transformation of the UK telecom industry by driving the continuing growth in newly provisioned customer services, including higher speed broadband and advanced IP services for residential and business applications," comments Frank Mount, group CTO of Cable & Wireless. "Cisco provided outstanding support to complete the first phase installation of CRS-1 routers to meet our go live date for the network."

"With Cable & Wireless' strong commitment to the global telecommunications industry extending to the consumer broadband services market, it is more critical than ever to have the right foundation to support growth in new voice, video, and data services," concludes Mike Volpi, senior vice president of routing technology for Cisco. "We are pleased that Cable & Wireless has selected Cisco CRS-1 for the core of its Next Generation Network transformation, and look forward to working to support its progressive network development."
