September 6, 2005 Milan, Italy -- Pirelli Broadband Solutions, a new company within the Pirelli Group specializing in broadband access technology and photonics for telecommunications operators worldwide, today announced that it will introduce two products from its photonics portfolio, City8TM CWDM and Dynamically Tunable Laser, at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Glasgow on September 26, 2005.
According to Pirelli representatives, City8TM is a carrier-class platform providing high-bandwidth, managed services over a single fiber pair. Pirelli's CWDM has eight channels with the option to upgrade to 16 and supports TDM and datacom interfaces. Field programmable electronic core and pluggable SFP optical transceivers allow the telecom operator to address all possible network applications, claims the company. Sub-lambda multiplexing enables the transmission of multiple services over a single wavelength while maintaining transparent client services.
"CWDM is one of the most promising technologies for deploying IP-based television, allowing telecoms to better manage the broadband traffic generated from services such as IPTV," explains Mauro Sacchetto, CEO of Pirelli Broadband Solutions. "CWDM technology is also both less complex and less expensive than the current alternative technology (DWDM). Flexibility and profitability for telecom operators are also the key benefits of Pirelli's new Dynamically Tunable Laser for fiber optic networks, which is able to replace more than 100 fixed lasers, providing a very high purity of the signal and stability of frequency," he adds.
Pirelli's DTL C13 high-power, full C-band tunable laser source is a continuous wave external cavity laser for advanced DWDM optical network systems. DTL C13 tunes over the entire C-band on the ITU-T 50-GHz channel grid. DTL C13 meets Telecordia GR-468-CORE qualification requirements--no moving parts are needed to achieve tunability.
Additionally, the hermetically-sealed 26-pin-butterfly packaging increases reliability and decreases form factor. The DTL C13 will have a great impact on inventory costs for the DWDM system, say company representatives. The DTL C13 can serve as a backup for WDM transponders, which account for a majority of the costs in an optical network. The DTL C13 also delivers flexibility, as telecom operators can easily switch to alternative channels and can reconfigure added channels to deliver new services in less time, claims the company.
