Gamma taps Transmode for UK optical network

September 6, 2005 London -- Alternative carrier Gamma Telecom has chosen Transmode's TS-1100 platform for its next-generation optical backbone in the UK.

Transmode will supply the TS-1100 systems across Gamma Telecom's extensive UK network supporting its existing services and the new Gigabit Ethernet capacity required for Gamma Telecom's previously announced SoftSwitch rollout.

Gamma Telecom's migration to a next-generation optical backbone will enable its resellers to deliver new IP services to their small to mid-sized enterprise (SME) market.

"The Transmode TS-1100 is the ideal platform to support Gamma Telecom now and in the future," contends Graham Hillman, technical director at Gamma Telecom. "Gamma Telecom requires an optical platform that can easily migrate our existing WDM traffic and support our near term SoftSwitch and other IP capacity requirements, whilst also providing a future proof platform. The Transmode solution is the right technical and commercial choice for us," he adds.

According to Transmode representatives, the TS-1100 deployment provides Gamma Telecom with a flexible and scalable platform utilizing the 7700 multi-protocol Transponder, 5400 2x GigE aggregator, and the 2501 Optical Protection Unit. Initially supporting low cost CWDM wavelengths, the system has the scalability to extend to additional CWDM and DWDM wavelengths in service. Using patented Intelligent WDM protocol recognition and functionality such as SFP/XFP pluggable optics, the TS-1100 provides network operators and enterprises with a true plug and play experience, claims the company, greatly reducing network and service turn up times.
