PPL Telcom picks White Rock Networks

September 19, 2005 Richardson, TX -- White Rock Networks, a provider of next-generation optical transport systems for metro networks, announced that PPL Telcom has selected its transport and multi-service optical access products to provide backhaul capabilities to cell sites in the Northeast United States for "one of the nation's top wireless carriers."

According to a press release, PPL Telcom will deploy White Rock's VLX2020 Optical Transport system in a multi-node OC-192 core aggregation ring supporting multiple subtended OC-48 optical access rings for backhaul of TDM and Ethernet cellular traffic. Also according to the release, White Rock's VLX2006 Multi-service Access platform will be installed at individual cell sites on the OC-48 rings providing fully protected Ethernet, DS1, and DS3 transport of wireless voice and data services.

"The selection of White Rock Networks' products will provide our wireless carrier customer with high-capacity TDM and Ethernet fed cell sites, capable of a rapid migration to their third-generation, data-enabled cellular network, resulting in significant savings in upgrade costs," comments Ray Winkler, vice president of engineering at PPL Telcom.

"PPL Telcom's immediate application called for high-density DS1 backhaul of existing 2G cellular voice traffic. The VLX2020's DS1 grooming, transmux, and 3/1 cross-connect capabilities proved an easy and cost-effective way to optimize the transport efficiency of PPL Telcom's existing T1 TDM traffic," adds Lonnie Martin, founder and CEO of White Rock Networks. "Combined with the Ethernet capabilities of the VLX2020 and VLX2006, our solution provides carrier-class, fully protected Ethernet transport for their impending transition to 3G, together with native support for legacy DS1 and DS3 backhaul."
