ADVA named preferred optical vendor by The Quilt

September 20, 2005 Mahwah, NJ and Munich, Germany -- ADVA Optical Networking announced that it has been accepted as a preferred vendor of optical networking equipment in The Quilt's Vendor Information Exchange (VIX) program. The Quilt is a U.S.-based coalition of advanced regional networking organizations in the research and education sectors.

According to a press release, ADVA is the first provider of optical platforms to be selected for the VIX program. The company says it will offer The Quilt members its Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 2000 and 3000 CWDM and DWDM systems, which deliver high-speed services and network infrastructure to metropolitan areas.

"ADVA's Optical+Ethernet networking solutions enable universities, enterprises, and carriers to offer competitive services and applications with a low total cost of ownership, independent of the existing network infrastructure," remarks Hudnall Croasdale, executive director of The Quilt. "ADVA's products are characterized by their extreme flexibility and scalability, two critical requirements for success in this market sub-segment."

The Quilt membership consists of 23 research and education networking organizations that include more than 200 universities and research institutions across the United States. Member organizations are involved in research projects spanning a range of advanced scientific and technological subjects. Driving heavy demand for bandwidth via applications like grid and cluster computing, The Quilt says its members require low latency, high security, and high reliability from the networks that connect them. The group says that fiber-optic networks promise relief for these constraints.

"Research and technical universities today require big pipes," confirms Brian P. McCann, ADVA's chief marketing and strategy officer. "These organizations are quickly moving from 1-Gig to 10-Gig infrastructures, based on their need for higher capacity to run data-intensive applications and research projects. Through this relationship with The Quilt, ADVA is providing access to critical network solutions at special pricing rates. We are pleased to offer technologies that help build the infrastructure today that will meet the needs of this critical industry for the next decade."

ADVA says its FSP systems enable up to 512 applications ranging from speeds of 8 Mbit/sec to 10 Gbit/sec to be transported over a single fiber pair more than 600 km.
