Transponder manufacturers bind to develop 10-Gbit/sec optical duo-binary multi-source agreement

September 21, 2005 Glasgow, Scotland -- Optical communications companies Essex Corporation, Kodeos Communications, and TeraSea announced today their formation of a 10-Gbit/sec Optical Duo-Binary, Multi-Source Working Group (ODB MSWG). The group's objective is to develop a common specification for extended reach 10-Gbit/sec transponder modules. The group says it will allow service providers and OEMs to contribute to a multi-source forum, while providing a mechanism that facilitates interoperability between participants.

The group says their optical transponder modules are initially aimed at extended reach applications up to 200 km, and support data rates from 9.95 to 11.3 Gbit/sec. The group says the modules' inherent aspect of optical duo-binary transmission offers network designers flexibility, longer reach, and better performance while saving manufacturing costs on next-generation systems.

"There is a growing market interest in extended reach, optical duo-binary modules for regional and long-haul platforms," contends Massimo Di Blasio, senior director of marketing and business development at Kodeos. "Our goal is to provide our system equipment customers a second source for Kodeos' MARATHON series products that are interoperable with respect to performance, size, and functionality. With the open invitation to OEM manufacturers and service providers, we expect a constructive forum that will allow us to define current and future requirements for 10-Gbis/sec modules."

"The interoperability with TeraSea's family of products will contribute to our customers' ability to enhance their optical transmission and lower their costs," adds Haim Laufer, VP of marketing and sales at TeraSea. "We will continue with our efforts to meet the industry's needs for flexible functionality of high-end, longer-reach transponders using existing infrastructure and line cards. This forum highlights our ongoing efforts to meet customer expectation in terms of standardization and interoperability."

"The Commercial Communications Product Division of Essex Corporation has identified a growing market demand for extended reach transponders," comments Paul Pace, director of sales and marketing at Essex. "The ESSEXEDGE duo-binary transponder was developed to meet customer requirements for this application. The intent of the agreement is to assure the customer base there are multiple sources to meet their needs."

The ODB MSWG says it intends to release the first open multi-source specification by December 2005, based on the 300-pin transponder multi-source agreement. The module would meet the 3.5" x 4.5" x 0.53" industry standard form factor.
