October 3, 2005 Madrid, Spain -- Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has contracted Alcatel to supply its metro Ethernet platform to support the roll-out of a triple play network in Taiwan. CHT, a recently privatized incumbent operator, plans to bring advanced voice, video, and high-speed Internet services to more than one million Taiwanese subscribers within the next three years.
Alcatel say the contract win represents a major expansion of the company's footprint in CHT's IP network. Under the contract, CHT will deploy the company's 7450 Ethernet Service Switch to aggregate triple play services delivered to residential and enterprise users as part of a fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) project. Phase one of the FTTB project, set for completion by the end of the year, is expected to meet the business communication needs of enterprises in Taiwan's major cities.
The contract was won in partnership with inTECH, a system integrator, and ZyXEL, a provider of Layer 2 switches. CHT says the project is a key part of its infrastructure overhaul to speed penetration of triple play services, which it is aggressively promoting. Alcatel is to provide an end-to-end metro Ethernet platform, based on its IP/MPLS technology, to differentiate Quality of Service (QoS) for voice, data, and video services, and the highest levels of network availability and scalability for such quality-sensitive and bandwidth-intensive services.
"Alcatel, as our close partner, helped CHT deploy one of the world's single largest ADSL projects with 1.26 million lines in 2001," comments CHT president Dr. Shyue-Ching Lu. "Our more recent cooperation with Alcatel in the Multimedia on Demand (MOD) project was also successful.
