Marconi teams with Pirelli Broadband

October 4, 2005 Milan, Italy -- Marconi and Pirelli Broadband Solutions announced that they have signed a co-operation agreement to deliver next-generation network transmission platforms to global telecommunications operators. Under the terms of the agreement, Marconi will provide to its customer base, as part of its photonics offering, Pirelli's City8 multi-service platform and CWDM metro access system.

Pirelli says its City8 platform is a carrier-class system that addresses the most critical issues facing metro and access networks, including demand for high-bandwidth services such as IPTV and video. The platform is managed by Marconi's ServiceOn network management system, which is designed to enable remote management of an entire telecommunications network, for increased efficiency and reduced operating costs.

According to the companies, the combined platforms will allow telecom operators to eliminate bottlenecks in their metro and access areas, and to better manage broadband traffic flow. Further, the companies say that Pirelli's CWDM technology will allow operators to multiply bandwidth in metro areas.

"This partnership sets the ground for creating a true center of excellence - capable, starting from today, of bringing an innovative and integrated metro core/metro access solution to the worldwide market, and to Marconi's customer base, represented by the most important telecom operators," comments Giorgio Bertolina, managing director of Marconi Communications S.p.A.

"The demand for our CWDM technology is proof that the strategy we are pursuing is the right one," adds Mauro Sacchetto, CEO of Pirelli Broadband Solutions. "Our CWDM technology is already deployed in several telecom networks, and through this strategic partnership we expect to further extend our reach in the marketplace. Together, we can go to market with an attractive end-to-end photonics solution."
