Japan Telecom deploys Cisco ROADM technology

October 6, 2005 Tokyo, Japan -- Cisco Systems announced that Japan Telecom, a subsidiary of the Softbank Group, has successfully completed an upgrade of its Cisco ONS 15454-based DWDM optical networking platform using the company's reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) technology. The service provider says the ROADM deployment, which has been operating for more than three months, has simplified its network maintenance while reducing installation times.

"We were successful in implementing ROADM technology in the same platform as the existing Cisco ONS15454, enabling constant provisioning of all wavelengths and simplified maintenance," remarks Junichi Miyakawa, executive vice president of Japan Telecom's Network Technology unit. "The implementation was quick and used the ADM monitoring device being operated, enabling the system to be created with the minimum necessary investment and new operational load. By doing this, we were able to create high-capacity optical infrastructure enabling our metro network to efficiently provide video-on-demand, VoIP, and services looking toward the future."

"Cisco's continued success in ROADM deployment further underscores the wide market adoption of our optical networking solutions by service providers and enterprises worldwide," comments Rajiv Ramaswami, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Optical Networking Group.

The ROADM technology is part of Cisco's Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN), an architecture designed to enable service providers to migrate to IP-based networks.
