ECI Telecom inks $59M deal with ICE Costa Rica

October 10, 2005 Petah Tikva, Israel -- ECI Telecom has signed an agreement with Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), a government-owned utility company in Costa Rica, to provide the utility with an advanced backbone network across Costa Rica, enabling telecommunication traffic routing throughout the country. The project is worth $59 million.

According to a press release, the turnkey project calls for ECI to deploy a complete optical transmission network, as well as the entire infrastructure installation, based on its XDM Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP). The network will provide the utility with capacity to deliver voice and data services to its fixed and mobile subscribers. Deployment is expected to start in approximately 3 months and to be completed over a 21-month period. The contract is subject to final approval by the General Comptroller of Costa-Rica.

According to the company, the project includes the delivery and installation of its XDM converged SDH and DWDM optical platforms, which enable up to 40 channels of 10 Gigabits each. In addition, the XDM platform handles ATM, point-to-point IP and Gigabit Ethernet, providing the utility with an advanced network architecture for future services and expansion. The XDM will be managed by the company's LightSoft management system, which the company says incorporates different technology layers to enable operators with multiple network views, covering SDH/SONET, optics, and Ethernet technologies.

Under the terms of the contract, ECI will also provide all aspects of the fiber installation and design, by supplying the fiber-optic cables, digging the fiber canals, and ducting a fiber installation works of over 1000 km across urban and rural areas of Costa Rica.

"We selected ECI as their single-platform technology is very advanced, providing us with the needed flexibility for future services," comments Claudio Bermudez, Telecommunications General Manager of ICE. "This is one of the largest and most strategic infrastructure projects in Costa Rica, and we have great confidence in ECI's field-proven experience to undertake such a important turnkey assignment."
