Burst-mode clock-phase aligner targets BPON and GPON OLT designs

October 14, 2005 Sunnyvale, CA -- Maxim Integrated Products has introduced its MAX3634, a burst-mode clock-phase aligner (CPA) for both BPON and GPON FTTH applications. According to the company, operating at 622 Mbit/sec and at 1.244 Gbit/sec within the signal's first 13 bits, the device can be implemented in either BPON or GPON optical line terminations (OLT) receivers.

The company says the device can be DC-coupled to the OLT limiting amplifier; the device then takes the upstream burst data from the limiting amplifier and provides a clock and clock-aligned resynchronized, differential output. Using the OLT system clock as a reference at 1/8th the data rate, the device aligns to the input data and is guaranteed to acquire a signal within the first 13 bits of the burst.

The device has a high-frequency jitter tolerance of > 0.8UI. It provides continuous high-speed LVPECL clock and data outputs that meet all PMD level GPON specifications and are compatible with standard FPGAs. The device also features a LVPECL reset input and a lock-detect output.

Available in a 7-mm x 7-mm, 48-pin TQFN package over the extended temperature range (-40°Celsius to +85°Celsius), the MAX3634 is priced at $15 in quantities of 1000 and up.
