Fiber-optic installation text targets installers, students

October 18, 2005 Acworth, GA -- The fiber-optic training, technical, and marketing consulting firm Pearson Technologies has announced the availability of its Successful Fiber Optic Network Installation - The Essentials, a 314-page field handbook and training text containing detailed information and instructions for installers of fiber-optic cable systems. The book also contains all knowledge required to pass all Fiber Optic Association (FOA) certification examinations.

According to a press release, the book's subtitle, "The Essentials," arose from the author's observation that conditions of high power loss, high installation cost, and reduced reliability consistently appear in fiber-optic installations where the essential knowledge presented in the text is ignored. The book's twenty-four chapters are organized into three parts covering the installation process in extensive detail, including 468 figures and photographs, troubleshooting sections for all procedures, and photographs of the steps of the installation activities.

From the nine chapters of Part 1, "Essential Information," installers and trainees learn the terminology and types of fiber-optic products, the numbers of product performance, and the manner in which the installation process impacts system performance. Part 1 is intended to enable installers and trainees to understand the principles of Part 2 and to follow the installation procedures in Part 3.

The five chapters of Part 2, "Principles of Installation," explore the principles that result in the procedures for installation. The eight chapters of Part 3 teach detailed procedures for the installation of cables, connectors, and splices. Part 3 also covers methods of certification, insertion loss testing, OTDR testing and interpretation, and troubleshooting.

The text's "cookbook-type" instructions are intended to function as both a training resource and as field installation procedures. Each chapter of the first two parts includes review questions. Each chapter in Part 3 includes both a one-page summary of the installation steps and a troubleshooting guide. The troubleshooting guides are intended to enable field installers to identify causes of problems and to take appropriate corrective actions.

The book updates and expands upon information contained in the firm's previous book, The Complete Guide To Fiber Optic Cable System Installation [Eric R. Pearson, Delmar 1997].
