October 19, 2005 Munich, Germany -- Kenyan network provider Kenya Data Networks (KDN) has commissioned Siemens to deliver fiber-optic transmission technology for a 1,140-kilometer fiber optic network. Once installed, the network will enable broadband services throughout the country. The provider says it also wants to make the network's advanced transmission capabilities available to other national and international operators and service providers.
Siemens says it plans to implement the fiber-optic network between October 2005 and the end of 2006 as a full-service platform based on its "Surpass hiT" multi-service provisioning platform. The backbone network will extend from Mombasa on Kenya's southeastern coast to its neighbor Uganda in the west.
KDN expects to offer the transmission capacities of its network to the country's largest mobile communication and Internet service providers, as well as to the country's fixed-network operators. In addition, the backbone will connect landlocked African nations including Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi to the planned East African undersea cable.
KDN and Siemens are designing and planning the network jointly. Siemens is executing the job as a turnkey project, and will cover all aspects of the network's delivery, installation, and deployment.
"It is very important for us that we are able to develop and implement our ideas for a new high-performance backbone network together with Siemens as our strategic partner," concludes Kai Wulff, managing director of KDN. "We are convinced that Siemens, with its well-known technical expertise for large turnkey projects, is the right partner for us."
