Turk Telekom selects Avici routers for IP/MPLS backbone network

October 20, 2005 North Billerica, MA -- Turk Telekom has chosen Avici Systems' TSR core routers for deployment in an IP/MPLS-based data backbone network, enabling the operator to provide new services to business and residential customers throughout Turkey. Deployment of new services will begin as early as 2006, with completion of the multi-phased contract set for 2007, according to a press release.

According to the release, the prime contract was awarded to Alcatel, which will have turnkey responsibility for network design and planning, integration, deployment, training, service rollout, and on-going maintenance. This network upgrade and expansion will enable the operator to extend its service coverage throughout the country and provide increased network capacity and reliability to meet demand for such services as high-speed Internet access, Voice over IP (VoIP), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), and video.

"We are looking forward to working with Turk Telekom as they expand and provide new service offerings to their customers by upgrading their existing infrastructure to a highly scalable, reliable, and cost-effective core to meet their business objectives," comments William Leighton, president and CEO of Avici Systems. "This latest win marks the continued expansion of Avici routing platforms to leading carriers around the globe."

"We are excited to be using Avici routers to transform our core network infrastructure to support requirements from our growing customer base for an IP/MPLS backbone network that will deliver all high-availability broadband value added services while reducing operating costs," remarks Yucel Bagriacik, director of data networks for Turk Telekom. "The Avici solution has demonstrated its ability to meet the demands of our next-generation network."

Avici's carrier-class routing systems include its TSR, SSR, and QSR platforms.
