Fiber-optic terminal server protects utility SCADA networks

October 24, 2005 North Andover, MA -- Dymec has introduced its DS2000- TS, a "utility-hardened, serial-to-IP" fiber-optic terminal server, designed to enhance network reliability and efficiency by integrating fiber-optic interfaces on serial data connections.

According to the company, serial-over-fiber interfaces provide optical signal isolation required for reliable data connectivity in harsh electromagnetic environments such as power utility substations. The company says that the fiber-optic integration of the DS2000-TS eliminates the typical alternative of collocating multiple external media conversion devices, thereby reducing space requirements, eliminating redundant power feeds, and simplifying field installation.

The company says the device can solve a range of industrial connectivity applications such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), with support for many serial device protocol options, including legacy bit-oriented protocols common with established SCADA systems.

The device also protects critical infrastructure through its network security features; the company says the device's cyber-security protection extends to the edge of critical infrastructure networks using advanced encryption, virtual private networking, and IP firewall features.

Also, the DS2000-TS optionally integrates the functionality of up to sixteen Dymec 5843/5844-HRT Links into a single integrated device.

"The combination of our DynaStar networking services with Dymec's established fiber-optic links reduces the cost of improving network reliability - a big win for utility operators," comments Zbigniew Opalka, head of product development at Dymec.
