October 24, 2005 Las Vegas, NV -- Fujitsu Network Communications and Adva Optical Networking announced that they have extended their OEM relationship with the addition of Adva's Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 150 to Fujitsu's Flashwave portfolio. The Adva platform, which supports the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) standard, will now be branded as the Flashwave 5150 Ethernet access platform.
"Our two companies have enjoyed a successful three year alliance, and we are now deepening this relationship with the addition of this exciting new, packet-based product portfolio," comments Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. "Many of our customers are placing more emphasis on packet services, and the new Flashwave 5150 platform provides an extremely powerful access networking approach that service providers can leverage to drive those services economically to more users."
The carrier-class platform includes access products designed for mass-market delivery of Ethernet-based services. The product family consists of a customer premises demarcation unit and a set of 10/100BaseT, 10/100BaseX, and Gigabit Ethernet aggregation devices. The platform is interoperable with SONET/SDH products and Layer 2/Layer 3 infrastructures. The ability to support over-subscription through rate control and the combination of multiple 10-Mbit/sec, 100-Mbit/sec, and sub-rate Gigabit Ethernet circuits from up to six customers is one of the platform's key benefits, according to the companies.
"With the introduction of the Fujitsu Flashwave 5150 Ethernet access platform and its low cost of ownership, mass market deployment of Ethernet as a transport solution for access networks becomes a reality," remarks Brian P. McCann, chief marketing and strategy officer at ADVA Optical Networking. "The platform can be used to create diverse services such as E-Line, E-LAN, or virtual private networks from a basic set of building blocks. Our extensive and unique operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) features provide the carrier-class service and reliability for customer applications, even when transported on a shared infrastructure."
According to Fujitsu, the Flashwave 5150 units are based on the IEEE 802.3ah EFM standard and support the lightweight OAM protocol as defined within the standard. According to the company, this protocol has been extended to offer additional management capabilities to enable large scale deployment in carrier networks. Advanced Performance Monitoring (PM) capabilities allow operators to efficiently monitor and maintain customer service level agreements. The company says that remote bandwidth management and over-subscription of aggregate ports is also supported, allowing flexible network deployment with simple service upgrades.
"We believe the Flashwave 5150 Ethernet access platform will be a popular new addition to what is already the most comprehensive portfolio of Carrier Ethernet, multiservice SONET, and WDM products in the industry, while maintaining familiar management and operating procedures," concludes Erickson.
