Holland's Versatel selects Nortel's metro optical platform

November 7, 2005 Amsterdam, Netherlands -- Versatel, a Dutch telecommunications company, has selected Nortel'smetro Ethernet and packet optical transport platforms to provide "triple play" VoIP, video, and broadband Internet services.

Under an equipment and services agreement signed earlier this year, Nortel has deployed the core of a network that now provides Versatel customers with broadband connectivity up to 20 Mbit/sec, according to a press release. The network was activated in August 2005, delivering live coverage of the Dutch soccer league. Nortel says the core network's optical and Ethernet capability will help Versatel to deliver Dutch soccer on live pay-TV over the next three years.

"The world of entertainment is now a digital one, and that has opened up tremendous opportunities for Versatel, allowing us to add television services to our portfolio," says Aad Beekhuis, chief operating officer of Versatel. "Sport is a proven driver of subscription revenues, and our acquisition of soccer broadcast rights is a critical part of our triple play strategy."

Versatel's optical and Ethernet backbone network platform employs Nortel's Metro Ethernet and Packet Optical portfolio sets. Nortel says the Ethernet-based distribution network enables Versatel to support triple play services as well as business grade broadband services.

The network includes Nortel's Metro Ethernet Router Switch 8600 and its Metro Ethernet Services Unit 1800/1850. The Ethernet-based infrastructure is operated over an optical network using the company's Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 platform, as well as its Common Photonic Layer (CPL) and Optical Metro 5000 platforms.

The entire multi-service broadband network also employs Nortel's Optical Network Manager, an end-to-end optical network management platform.
