CPE platform targets Carrier Ethernet services

December 19, 2005 Spokane Valley, WA -- World Wide Packets has introduced its LE-310 as an addition to the company's LightningEdge product family. The company calls the LE-310 a customer premise equipment (CPE) device designed to provide more cost-effective deployment and delivery of converged broadband data and Internet access services. The company says the device employs flexible service demarcations, including 100-Mbit/sec or 1-Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) over fiber and copper media, while lowering initial investments for Carrier Ethernet business services, such as Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Ethernet Private LAN (E-LAN).

Key features and benefits of the LE-310, according to the company, include:

* Versatile Ethernet service demarcation. All LE-310 ports are either dual speed (10/100-Mbit/sec or 100-Mbit/sec/GbE) or triple speed (10/100-Mbit/sec/GbE). This allows for the delivery of 100-Mbit/sec or GbE drops to subscribers across either fiber (SFP) or copper media. The LE-310 also offers protected (redundant) gigabit uplinks.

* Enables low-cost ring architectures. The LE-310 enables GbE ring architecture with customer demarcation at 100-Mbit/sec and/or GbE over fiber and/or copper, and SONET-like resiliency and stability provided by the company's carrier Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and Rapid Spanning Tree Domains (RSTPD).

* Facilitates transition to Gigabit speeds. The dual rate ports facilitate transition from 100-Mbit/sec to Gigabit uplinks, creating pluggable dual rate optics which can be used to avoid physical operations on the customer premise, translating into cost and labor savings at user sites.

* Termination of multiple services. The LE-310 delivers multiple service types to multiple tenants within a single facility, thus creating flexible customer interface options that provide incremental revenue opportunities.

* MDU/MTU aggregation of portals. The LE-310 enables aggregation of access portals via rate management and advanced Quality of Service (QoS) at the LE-310 ingress, thus facilitating transport of residential or business "triple play" services.

The company says that, as the LE-310 further streamlines the delivery of applications and is based on a carrier-class architecture, it provides superior QoS, guaranteeing time-sensitive voice and video transport quality. The company calls the LE-310 "an infinitely scalable" platform for IP multicast video delivery, with features that optimize channel change performance and distribute multicast process to the edge of the network.
