IEEE picks fSONA's FSO platform for conference connectivity

December 21, 2005 Mclean, VA -- fSONA Systems deployed its SONAbeam free space optical (FSO) system to bridge the high-speed networks of two conference hotels in support of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee's (LMSC) plenary session, held in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The IEEE 802 LMSC develops and publishes international standards for LANs and MANs, including 802.3 (Ethernet LANs), 802.11 (Wireless LANs), and 802.16 (Broadband Wireless MANs).

"The SONAbeam technology was an excellent choice for our application - it was fast, secure, and eliminated our RF interference concerns," says Dr. Everett Rigsbee, executive secretary of IEEE 802. "It will be a very valuable tool for use at future IEEE 802 sessions that require a wireless bridging device."

For VeriLAN, a provider of wireless conferencing platforms, fSONA's SONAbeam 155-E system delivered a 100-Mbit/sec optical wireless link to support the 1500 engineers attending the session. The link was used to transport data and Internet connections between the two conference venues.

"Rapid deployment and high-speed connectivity are key features of fSONA's free space optic links," comments Sunny Taylor, CEO for fSONA. "It was especially significant that a real-world application of the SONAbeam solution was demonstrated at this conference, given the technical scope of the audience."
