MARCH 5, 2007 --EdenTree Technologies (search for EdenTree) today announced the availability of EdenTree Configuration Manager, which it claims is a breakthrough application that reduces software test cycles through automated reconfiguration of computers used in test lab environments.
EdenTree Configuration Manager allows test engineers to automate the setup, archiving, and restoration of any UNIX, Windows, or Linux computer at any time in a fraction of the time it takes to manually reconfigure the computer, say company representatives. The configuration tool allows test lab personnel to manage and share complex system environments consisting of hundreds of combinations of computer platforms, application versions, software releases, and operating systems in active testing.
Rebuilding or updating a computer with an operating system and application can take hours or days with other methods, say EdenTree representatives. But Configuration Manager automates that process, reducing the time to between 15 minutes and an hour.
"Configuration complexity is stealing away hundreds of hours of productive test lab time as lab engineers are stuck for days setting up for tests to support expanded product lines and support for multiple operating systems," explains Jay Oyakawa, president and CEO of EdenTree Technologies. "Configuration Manager pays for itself quickly in labs that are constantly upgrading/downgrading applications by recapturing this lost productivity and eliminating unnecessary test beds and devices under test."
"By and large, test labs have been left out of the mainstream server virtualization trend not because they don't need to better utilize their infrastructure, but because the solutions targeted at IT don't meet the OS independence and transparency requirements that are crucial to these labs," adds Jessy Cavazos, industry manager for the Communications Test & Measurement Group at Frost & Sullivan. "EdenTree brings unique capabilities to this problem with its Configuration Manager, and we're optimistic that this pioneering effort will turn into a vibrant part of the industry."
In much the same way that virtualization is being used to reduce space and costs and improve computer utilization in production environments, Configuration Manager achieves these results for test lab environments, ensuring transparency, multi-OS support, a programmatic interface that allows automated configuration of devices without manual intervention, and other key features required for test lab environments.
Configuration Manager can be used to recreate a complete test environment. Application versions, databases, operating systems, test scripts, and test data can be saved and recalled, saving time and eliminating set-up errors when recreating a specific configuration at a later date. The system makes it easy to capture and resolve defects quickly by reproducing complex configurations in an error state, says the company.
Configuration Manager is a member of EdenTree's Lab Operating System suite and integrates seamlessly with the company's Lab Manager 5.0 application, a drag-and-drop topology manager and scheduler. Lab Manager automatically creates test topologies by managing physical layer switches that provide connectivity in a test lab. The two applications working together provide complete topology management, scheduling, and automation of configurations and include integrated user access permissions, event messaging, and reporting features.
The Configuration Manager software runs on a standard EdenTree appliance. It communicates with computers and storage arrays using storage area networks (SAN) and Ethernet networks (LAN) depending upon individual customer requirements.
Configuration Manager is available today for Sun Solaris, Linux, and Windows based computers. The price for Configuration Manager is between $1,000 and $5,000 per server, depending on customer configuration.
