Cortina adds Interlaken GbE device to MAC product line

MARCH 27, 2007 -- Cortina Systems (search for Cortina), a supplier of intelligent communications solutions for network equipment manufacturers, today announced CS3472, which the company touts as the industry's first Interlaken Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) media access controller (MAC).

According to the company, the CS3472 MAC doubles the bandwidth capacity of existing SPI-based GbE MACs and can simultaneously sustain line rate performance on all 24 ports. Along with the CS3477, a 10GbE MAC IC, the CS3472 provides networking companies with complete Ethernet Interlaken aggregation for high-performance switches and routers in enterprise and metro networks.

"The CS3472 MAC enables Cortina's customers to meet the metro network synchronization requirements increasingly deployed in carriers' networks," says Zino Chair, vice president of marketing at Cortina. "This highly integrated Ethernet aggregation device, CS3472, offers the most advanced classification and policing functions while doubling the bandwidth of current offerings."

The CS3472 MAC offers a high-density line rate or oversubscription aggregation front-end solution. It delivers quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees by integrating rule-based Layer 5 classifications, IPv6 and MPLS support, and a flexible scheduler to enable bandwidth guarantees for critical traffic.

The device connects to a packet processor through a high-performance, low-pin-count Interlaken interface. The MAC also reduces board complexity by allowing direct connection to optical SFP modules and copper PHYs with SMII links through fully integrated SerDes.
