Comcast to deploy 300-mi fiber network extension in Vermont

JUNE 1, 2007 -- Comcast (search for Comcast) has announced the beginning of a 300-mile extension of its fiber network in 2007, expanding access to Comcast's cable television, high-speed Internet, and phone services in 58 Vermont communities.

Many residents of the communities benefiting from this network extension still depend on copper-wire phone service, dial-up Internet, and satellite TV companies, which cannot match the clarity of Comcast's high-definition (HD) picture or deliver on-demand programming, say company representatives. With Comcast's phone service--Comcast Digital Voice--scheduled to launch in Vermont later this year, the network extension will support a triple-play bundle of video, data, and voice services to Vermonters from Westminster to Coventry.

Because Comcast provides complimentary broadband services to schools, libraries, and Boys & Girls Clubs in Vermont, its investments in education and youth development also will increase in Vermont with this significant network expansion, say company representatives.

"Comcast is delivering on our commitment to bring cutting-edge services to many parts of Vermont that have never before had broadband," contends Dan Blakeman, vice president of Comcast's Vermont system. "With the arrival of spring, we've deployed construction crews all over the state who are hard at work getting the job done."

This year's network extension activity will take place in 58 communities, including Ira, Sunderland, Manchester, Plainfield, Hardwick, Hyde Park, Morristown, Hartland, Mount Holly, Chester, Londonderry, Weston, Woodstock, Coventry, Brattleboro, Vernon, Poultney, Chittenden, Middletown Springs, West Rutland, Ferrisburg, and St. Albans.

The expansion is on top of the build-out of 350 miles of broadband in Vermont last year.
Customers will be notified in advance of local network construction activity and will receive various forms of communication as Comcast services become available in new areas, says Blakeman.
