BTI Photonic Systems enhances Netstender

JUNE 12, 2007 -- BTI Photonic Systems (search for BTI) has announced new features for its Netstender platform to support the delivery of carrier-grade Ethernet over "microWDM." The enhancements are designed to enable service providers to build economically viable next-generation transport networks to accommodate the bandwidth required for VDSL, PONs, and mobile network backhaul.

To address the rapid bandwidth growth from next-generation access technology, the new features enable service providers to economically break through the limitations of today's 2.5-Gbit/sec SONET/SDH rings and support the seamless integration of Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10GbE transport interfaces, says BTI.

"We continue to see the emergence of GbE and 10GbE as the new atomic units of transport in the metro," said Michael Howard, principal analyst & co-founder, Infonetics Research. "Bandwidth-hungry next-generation access from VDSL, PON, and 3G wireless requires backhaul transport for large volumes of video traffic that Ethernet on WDM can now address effectively."

BTI's microWDM platform, Netstender, now delivers the following functionality:

  • A dual GbE muxponder module for backhaul of GbE line-side ports on next-generation access devices. With integrated protection against fiber cuts and other service outages, the card is designed to provide cost-effective native GbE connectivity on WDM for the delivery of multiple GbE interfaces on a single wavelength.
  • A 2.5-Gbit/sec wavelength conversion multi-protocol module supporting GbE service transport and SONET/SDH on a single card for flexible network growth. The card integrates performance monitoring and flexible pluggable interfaces for effective service-level agreements (SLAs) and demarcation of transport capacity.
  • A 10-Gbit/sec wavelength conversion module with pluggable XFP interfaces and OTU2 compliance. Using OTU2 digital wrapper and forward error correction (FEC), the module provides the choice of cost-effective 10-Gbit/sec regeneration, demarcation, or service delivery in both metro and regional networks.
  • A series of network management features including the BTI Network Manager for customers who require a carrier-grade network management tool for managing BTI nodes. The BTI Network Manager is designed to provide advanced security, fault management, network topology, and provisioning capabilities easily managed from a central location. For customers who use third-party systems, BTI provides a full set of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) capabilities to provide open access to manage the Netstender platform.

"BTI's microWDM combines the bandwidth scalability of WDM with the openness of Ethernet in the industry's first 1U and 2U platforms optimized for Edge networks," said Glenn Thurston, vice president marketing, BTI Photonic Systems. "When compared to today's legacy transport architectures, carrier-grade Ethernet on microWDM delivers 100-times the capacity at one-tenth the cost per bit. That adds up to remarkably cost-effective scalability."

BTI will demonstrate the full Netstender product line at NXTcomm next week.
