One Communications taps Turin for metro and core

JUNE 18, 2007 -- Turin Networks (search for Turin Networks) has announced that One Communications, a privately held provider of telecommunications services, has deployed its Traverse platform to interconnect its metro networks and to increase optical backbone capacity to support the company's IP core network.

Formed in July 2006 through the combination of Choice One, CTC, and Conversent Communications, One Communications operates a network that extends across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and upper Midwest regions of the United States. The expanding company required a next-generation optical backbone network that united the MANs in the many markets it serves, while also providing added bandwidth capacity to support the company's IP core. One Communications determined that a multiservice optical backbone network, using 10G gear from Turin Networks, offered significant economic and technological advantages over an IP over DWDM approach, Turin asserts.

"The advanced bandwidth management and switching capabilities provided by Turin's Traverse platform allow us to provide the levels of service flexibility and resiliency we determined were essential in our next generation optical core network," said Russ Oliver, CTO of One Communications. "By simplifying end-to-end provisioning and manageability for both Carrier Ethernet/IP and traditional services, Turin's solution allows us to leverage our IP core by migrating to a softswitch-based service delivery architecture as well as to launch other advanced new services such as IP peering using GigE."

"Turin is proud to be a key component of One Communications' next generation optical backbone," said Henry Wasik, president and CEO of Turin Networks. "Wins with landmark customers such as One Communications demonstrate that our products are the premier solution for leading carriers who want to increase the capacity of their optical networks and enable the rapid delivery of new IP-based services."
