BroadLight strengthens GPON ONT

JUNE 21, 2007 -- BroadLight (search for BroadLight), supplier of GPON semiconductors and software, has unveiled the BL2347 GPON (search for GPON) optical network termination (ONT) system-on-chip (SoC) targeted at lowering the cost of residential ONTs. The BL2347 extends BroadLight's product coverage for all ONT types by integrating voice and Ethernet switching features, says the company.

"Our customers are constantly driving to lower cost and BroadLight is focused on helping our customers achieve their goals," explains Didi Ivancovsky, founder and vice president of marketing. "Voice and home network interfacing are key, and the BL2347 eliminates at least two bill of material [BOM] components common on many ONT types making for smaller, lower power, and lower cost equipment."

According to the company, the BL2347 integrates a voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) digital signal processor (DSP) and a four-port Ethernet switch and provides a throughput performance of 1 Gbit/sec for any packet size on its Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) port. With its interoperability proven GPON MAC and PONMaker software, the BL2347 offers ONT equipment vendors a fast and reliable path to market with the assurance that it will interoperate with any ITU-T G.984-compliant optical line terminal (OLT), say BroadLight representatives.

BroadLight's BL2000 GPON SoC family includes the BL2338 for low-cost residential data-only applications; the BL2340 for high performance multi-dwelling and multi-tenant ONTs; and the recently announced BL2348 residential gateway (RG) device. BroadLight's GPON ONT includes a full suite of software products as well as novel, cost-focused reference designs, says the company. Building upon the BL2000 platform enables developers to offer multiple ONT types quickly and cost-effectively.

The BL2347 will sample to customers at the end of 2007.
