Sycamore establishes R&D Center in China

JULY 24, 2007 -- Sycamore Networks Inc. (search for Sycamore Networks), today announced the opening of a research and development center in China. Based in Shanghai's Caohejing Hi-Tech Park, this R&D center enhances the company's product and technology development capabilities by tapping into the expanding pool of highly skilled technical talent in China, say Sycamore representatives.

According to the company, the new R&D center will support the company's mission to provide innovative products and technologies that enable network operators to build agile, resilient, and scalable networks optimized for the high-bandwidth voice, video, and data applications driving network growth.

"Our new Shanghai R&D center will strengthen our ability to deliver best-in-class multiservice networking solutions as service providers in China and around the world evolve their infrastructure networks to accommodate increased traffic and more dynamic broadband applications," contends Daniel E. Smith, president and chief executive officer. "This is a strategic investment that we believe will accelerate new feature development and enhance the value of the solutions we bring to our customers."

The Sycamore Networks (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Research and Development Center, which currently employs over 30 networking engineers, will focus on advanced features for existing products as well as new product development. These R&D initiatives include products that support intelligent multiservice switching, ASON control plane technology, and advanced IP/Ethernet interworking, say Sycamore representatives. The company says it expects to more than double its Shanghai-based R&D resources by this time next year, and also expects to see significant growth in the center over the next several years.

"China has emerged as one of the world's most dynamic and significant markets for leading edge communications applications and services," notes Kevin Oye, vice president of systems and technology. "By locating a key development center in China, we can tap the country's world renowned university education system for top talent that can help Sycamore continue to create innovative products for both the domestic and global markets."

Dr. Tao Yang, a graduate of Tsinghua University in Beijing and one of the original members of Sycamore's intelligent optical networking development organization, oversees research and development initiatives at the Shanghai R&D Center. Building upon Sycamore's engineering team in Shanghai, including senior staff that have years of experience with Sycamore products and in-depth expertise in advanced optical switching technology, the company says it plans to aggressively expand the Shanghai organization by identifying and recruiting top local talent, including accomplished systems, software, and hardware engineers, new graduates with advanced degrees from leading technical universities, and experienced managers for long-term leadership.
