Tellabs enhances OTS with advanced Ethernet and packet functions

AUGUST 21, 2007 -- The addition of Ethernet switching and aggregation to Tellabs' (search for Tellabs) 7100 optical transport system (OTS) provides a Carrier Ethernet platform that economically enables converged transport networks.

Dan Kelly, executive vice president of transport products for Tellabs, says that the new capabilities will help ensure the availability of Ethernet services on upgraded transport networks to reliably deliver high-speed video and data.

The Tellabs 7100 OTS integrates leading-edge optical technology to deliver all types of transport services -- reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM), Carrier Ethernet, SAN, video, and SONET/SDH -- which may allow service providers to buy fewer standalone Ethernet switches and MSPPs, consequently lowering capex and maintenance costs while delivering more Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and traffic via light waves.

"The Tellabs 7100 OTS with ROADM gained a valuable measure of credibility via its inclusion in Verizon's FiOS build-out," says Jason Marcheck, principal analyst, optical infrastructure, for Current Analysis. "The addition of Ethernet switching and aggregation ensures that Tellabs has the products to meet the full range of operator requirements."

Availability of the enhanced Tellabs 7100 OTS is planned for the fourth quarter this year.
