Tellabs 7100 enhancement details emerge

AUGUST 23, 2007 By Stephen Hardy -- A few more details of the Ethernet aggregation and switching functions Tellabs (search for Tellabs) will add to its 7100 ROADM platform have been released. The upgrades will enable Tellabs to compete for business in the emerging packet optical network platform space.

According to information obtained by Lightwave, the upgrades include the development of the SMTM-P Packet Multiplexing Module, which can be integrated in the 7100's Universal System Shelf as well as its Nano configuration. The module uses SFP optics to support 10-Gigabit Ethernet on the client side. On the line side, the module is equipped with "widely tunable" ITU lasers as well as FEC and EFEC support.

The SPFAB SONET/SDH/Packet Fabric is designed to provide single-shelf operation with 1+1 redundancy and support of 280 Gbits of switching capacity. Tellabs says that the ability to link multiple shelves to increase switching capacity will be available in the future.

Finally the TGIM-P 10G Interface Module features XFPs on the client side for support of 10-Gbit/sec LAN PHY and OTU2 applications. Again, a widely tunable laser and FEC and EFEC support characterize the line side.

The new capabilities are expected to be available by the fourth quarter of this year.

The upgrade brings the 7100 in line with a growing list of platforms designed to combine ROADM, SONET/SDH, and Ethernet packet aggregation and switching functions in the same box. Other examples include ECI Telecom's XDM family (which ECI claims was first to market in 2001), Cisco's ONS 15454 MSTP, Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE 9500, Alcatel-Lucent's 1850 TSS, Nortel's OME 6500, Ciena's 4200RS, Meriton's 7200 OSP, and Siemens' hiT 7080 and 7300.
