DECEMBER 3, 2007 -- XO Communications (search for XO Communications) says it plans to expand the capacity of its nationwide IP/MPLS network using Cisco (search for Cisco) CRS-1 routers. The network upgrade is designed to meet the growing demand for high-speed Internet access services and support its expansion into the high-capacity IP transit services market.
XO says the expansion will more than double current capacity and with an eye toward a four-fold increase, while providing the ability to scale to a multi-terabit capable router complex.
The deployment of the CRS-1 will support such services as high-speed dedicated Internet access, IP transit, IP-VPN, and VoIP services for businesses, large enterprises, and service providers. XO also expects opex benefits from the new equipment.
"Our goal is to deliver the most advanced network infrastructure that enables XO to maintain and strengthen our leadership in providing innovative IP services for our enterprise and service provider customers," said Randy Nicklas, chief technology officer at XO Communications. "By investing in our IP network with the latest technology, we can respond quickly to the increased demand we are seeing for more bandwidth and continue to pursue new opportunities that will drive revenue with an improved cost basis."
The XO IP/MPLS network is designed to offer customers -- including cable companies, content providers, enterprises, international telecommunications companies, and other service providers -- robust and scalable network services at high bandwidth levels to help them manage their growing Internet traffic at speeds of up to 10 Gbits/sec.
The upgrade of the XO IP/MPLS network follows a recently completed expansion of the XO long-haul transport network. The carrier recently deployed an additional 800 Gbits/sec of capacity in core XO long-haul network nodes on major coast-to-coast network routes. This additional network capacity augments a capacity expansion the company completed last year which delivered 400 Gbits/sec of capacity across the entire XO long-haul network.
