DECEMBER 19, 2007 -- Ekinops (search for Ekinops), provider of optical transport, WDM, and aggregation equipment for service providers and enterprise networks, today announced that Global Crossing (search for Global Crossing) has selected the Ekinops 360 optical transport platform to support its metro networks in the U.S.
Global Crossing confirms it is using the Ekinops 360 platform in metro DWDM optical networks in most major U.S. cities to transport high-capacity traffic at speeds of up to 10 Gbits/sec. The platform connects metropolitan network nodes to long-haul networks and enables Global Crossing to provide Ethernet, SONET, and wavelength services to a growing number of customers.

The Ekinops 360 is a carrier-class optical transport platform designed for metro, regional, and long-haul DWDM and CWDM networks, say company representatives. The platform can aggregate or transport any Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SONET, or SDH client protocol.
The company says the Ekinops 360 was designed as the ultimate solution for optical transport applications such as video transport, broadband and wireless traffic backhaul, and Ethernet services. With the Ekinops equipment, Global Crossing is well positioned to capture the growing demand for high-speed services, claims Ekinops.
"The Ekinops 360 is a perfect fit for next-generation service providers, such as Global Crossing," contends Jonathan Amir, vice president of sales for Ekinops. It offers plenty of capacity for today's needs and is highly scalable to accommodate higher-speed services in the future."
Ekinops says its platform allows for long-haul fiber spans at a fraction of the cost, size, and complexity of other CWDM and DWDM systems. It combines a compact and powerful WDM shelf ideal for transporting and aggregating traffic at edge locations and a larger shelf with capacity and density to handle core sites and large data centers.
The Ekinops platform includes a flexible set of aggregation modules that combine multiple inputs such as Gigabit Ethernet, OC-48/STM-16 or Fibre Channel and transport them at 10G over one wavelength. This aggregation reduces the number of wavelengths in the network and lowers the overall cost of DWDM and CWDM networks by 30% to 50%, claims the company.
