Lexcom chooses Wave7's Trident7

JANUARY 7, 2008 -- Lexcom, a full-services communications company based in Lexington, NC, is deploying the Trident7 Universal Access Platform from Wave7 Optics (search for Wave7 Optics) to provide a RF and IP video, voice, and data services to homes and businesses throughout its service region. Wave7 Optics supplies GE-PON and GPON standards-based FTTP equipment for residential and business services.

Lexcom says it is deploying the Trident7 (search for Trident7) as an "overlay" network to an existing telephony and hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network serving parts of the city and Davidson County. Wave7 Optics is uniquely qualified for Lexcom's project due to its patented "RF return" technology, claim company representatives, as well as its excellent track record and growing share in the IOC space.

"The economics of the Trident7 system allows us to go all the way to the home with fiber, and Wave7's integrated RF return technology allows us to support all of our existing set-top boxes and any other SCTE and DOCSIS compatible set-top boxes," explains Michael Smith, engineering manager at Lexcom. "We need a universal FTTH solution that will enable us to have a choice in the most cost-effective network configuration, depending on various factors, be it EPON, GPON, or point-to-point."

"As a function of including the most advanced technology, the Trident7 enables service providers to operate an FTTH network with several capital and operating expense advantages," adds Emmanuel Vella, CMO of Wave7 Optics. "For instance, the Trident7 product portfolio includes a field deployable Compact Optical Line Terminal (COLT) option, which enables Lexcom to extend their reach to other service areas, such as greenfield developments, without the costs associated with building a 'central office' type facility or deploying environmentally controlled cabinets."

Lexcom began this project in the second quarter of 2007, with service beginning in the fourth quarter of 2007. According to Wave7, the Trident7 is the industry's only universal FTTP platform capable of delivering standards-based GE-PON and GPON technologies from a common chassis.
