Pannaway updates access platform with 2.5 GPON and non-blocking fabric

FEBRUARY 27, 2008 -- Pannaway Networks (search for Pannaway) has announced the availability of new 2.5-Gbit PON access modules and a higher-speed 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) transport fabric for its MAGNM-20 multiservice access platform.

"The service convergence network architecture allows us to add upgrades to the core network we've built with Pannaway over the last two years, as we prepare to add more than 200 fiber-to-the-home subscribers," says Bill Fogg, network planner for Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom.

Pannaway's MAGNM-20 is a dense, carrier-class, non-blocking GPON platform based on Ethernet and can be upgraded to support new access technologies without disruption to existing network operation.

The company is also announcing the availability of a new 10GbE transport fabric for the MAGNM-20. This new fabric is the next iteration of its separated access/transport fabric and will enable telcos to increase the performance of their MAGNM-20 platform to support emerging high-bandwidth applications, says Pannaway. The transport fabric reportedly is able to be deployed without causing disruption to a telco's operational network.

MAGNM-20 2.5 GPON highlights include:

  • Optical line terminal (OLT) blade provides four 2.5/1.2 OLT ports, resulting in a capacity to service exceeding 2,300 endpoints per chassis.
  • Can be upgraded without network disruption.
  • Small-form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers -- Class B+ GPON bidirectional optical transceivers.
  • Managed via Pannaway's broadband access manager.

The MAGNM-20 10GbE fabric increases the speed of the transport ring to 10 Gbits/sec and can support popular subscriber functions like streaming Internet video and IPTV.

The new transport fabric and GPON blades will enter customer beta trials in 2Q08.
