MRV intros 10G FSO system

APRIL 28, 2008 -- MRV Communications Inc. (search for MRV) has announced the free-space optics (FSO)-based TereScope TS-10GE, which it touts as the industry's first wireless 10-Gigabit Ethernet system.

The line-of-sight TereScope is designed to provide enterprises and service providers with a cost-effective and high-bandwidth wireless option for extending backbone networks between multiple buildings without a need for rights-of-way or a fiber-optic cable plant.

The patented TereScope TS-10GE has a range of up to 850 m in clear weather. It connects to the LAN using an XFP interface with physical-layer and wavelength flexibility and distances up to 10 km. The TereScope TS-10GE can be connected to an MRV 100-Mbit/sec RF system for back up in the event of heavy fog.

The TereScope family of FSO products provides cost-effective, high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of last-mile applications. The TS-10GE uses MRV's patented passive air link (PAL) technology to improve optical coupling with the small area 10 GE detectors. More than 7,000 links have been deployed worldwide.

"The TereScope TS-10GE fills a void for enterprises moving to 10Gig Ethernet backbones, because it gives them the ability to cost-effectively extend their networks between buildings without dropping down to a lower-speed solution," said Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. "The TereScope TS-10GE also complements MRV's OptiSwitch 930 10-Gigabit Ethernet demarcation device, allowing us to give carriers a full complement of access products at 10-gigabit speeds."

The 10GE TereScope TS-10GE will be available in the second half of 2008 with a list price of $45,000.
