EXFO targets fiber monitoring applications

APRIL 29, 2008 -- EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc. (search for EXFO) today announced the release of Fiber Guardian, a remotely controllable unit strategically placed along an optical network for continuous monitoring and troubleshooting applications.

Fiber Guardian is a stand-alone, remote test unit that enables customers to monitor critical fiber along their networks without the large investments required for more expensive, client-server remote fiber test systems, say company representatives. Whether for 24/7 monitoring or ad-hoc manual testing of fibers before service activation on existing fibers, this lean monitoring option can be effortlessly integrated into a corporate network, says EXFO. Fiber Guardian can also be upgraded to become part of EXFO's full-fledged NQMSFiber monitoring system.

Leveraging EXFO's expertise in OTDRs, Fiber Guardian combines leading-edge technology with easy-to-use software to ensure plug-and-play operability within seconds of connecting a new fiber route to the test unit, says the company. Auto-discovery and provisioning functions allow users to save a considerable amount of time in their set-ups, since connected fibers are automatically detected and fault-detection routines are automatically programmed.

Remote test units are accessible from anywhere on a global basis via standard Web Services (SOAP-XML), allowing for quick integration into third-party or proprietary systems. These systems can also be notified through a standard SMTP-XML gateway.

Through a secure, multi-user Web interface, local administrators and users can easily access the remote test unit in their own language and view results, faults logs, and other data within their own time zone.

Fiber Guardian has been designed for all types of markets. Network service providers and cable TV operators may require Fiber Guardian to ensure continuous quality of service (QoS) during potentially dangerous construction work, while military, government bodies, and certain utility companies may need to trigger remote OTDR tests in hard-to-reach spots on their networks.

"Fiber Guardian is the solution of choice for monitoring strategic parts of an optical network to ensure quality of service," contends Etienne Gagnon, EXFO's vice president of product management and marketing. "The value-add of our solution is that it can grow along with customers' heightened requirements to deploy a full-fledged remote fiber test system."
