Glimmerglass debuts Release 5 of its optical switch software

MAY 7, 2008 – Glimmerglass (search for Glimmerglass), provider of Intelligent Optical Switches, today announced Release 5 of its system software with enhancements to its connection monitoring and event reporting capabilities for complex fiber networks.

With the software, network operators can define and set optical thresholds unique to the management of their networks, say company representatives. Now network managers can monitor performance "at-a-glance," as well as monitor and log individual connections.  This increased visibility enables network managers to identify and isolate problems in their networks, ensuring a more rapid response and reducing operational costs. For example, a network administrator in London, responding to a network failure in Mumbai, can immediately rule out the switch as the cause and determine if the problem is upstream or downstream, explains Glimmerglass.

The release also incorporates new capabilities for port and connection configuration. The ability to assign connection names and port-specific comments complements enhanced monitoring to tailor reporting to individual environments. In addition, Release 5 makes all of this information visible to users of the Glimmerglass Console multi-switch management software (See "Glimmerglass launches multi-switch management console software").

"Once again, feedback from our broad customer base has resulted in significant improvements in the operational effectiveness of this exciting optical switching technology," reports Robert Lundy, CEO of Glimmerglass. "This release is already showing its value in both telecom and government networks."
